It’s great to see the new On-One Swapout frames back in stock – I thought I’d trawl the archives to show you some of the weird frames we’ve had over the years.

    STEEL SLIDING DROPOUT  – 2005/2006
    Img_1116

It says “September 2005” on the first photo I have of the white steel 29er inbred I’ve got here. I’m glad a got a picture of it – it was an airfreight sample that got flown in, built, tested, left outside a pub and stolen in the space of 48hrs. It featured our sliding dropout system that was lovely, but quite expensive to produce. Took a LONG time to get working, and then lasted about a season before we replaced it.

    SCANDAL – 2006/2007

Making the Scandal with fixed dropouts saved a lot of weight, and this is still the basis for the frame we sell today. I ran this bike with a Reba as shown, and also a few different 29er rigid forks. Lovely bike. This sample model was made in straight 7005, not the better 7046 we use now. It’s still going strong under racer Twinklydave.

    SLOT DROPOUT INBRED – 2007
    Pastedgraphic-6

This is my lovely Sand coloured slot dropout frame. I designed the slot dropouts to be a cheap frame to produce, with a disc calliper position that didn’t move the rear wheel under braking. It’s the basis for the position on the current Swapout dropouts and works really well. I rode this bike a lot until I started riding in Hebden Bridge which required long travel suspension, big tyres, and made us make the Summer Season 456. Last seen when I lent it to Colum Mytton a snowboarder turned plasterer from Hebden Bridge. I must find out where it is.

BENT SEAT TUBE FIXIE 29er – Mid 2007
    Pastedgraphic-7

Made as a fixie specific race bike for “Richpips” this had a slacker seat angle, though normal (not super short) chain stays. A short front centre to allow the front end to pop up. Looks amazing. Rides oddly.

    MONSTA – Mid 2006
    Pastedgraphic-9

A sort of Pompino/Inbred 29er cross – the Monsta never made production but is quite a fun bike and currently built up with flat bars and a child seat. Hasn’t been ridden for a while.

    WIERDY BENT RACE 29er – Late 2007
    Pastedgraphic-8

Built at the same time as Richpips Fixie, this was “my” bike, now owned (I think) by my cousin. And those wheels need to come back from Twinklydave too. Was designed to have the seat in the “normal” position but with a funky looking seat tube. Looks ace. I raced it in a Duathlon in Haworth and went quite fast. It weighed about 18lb I think!

HEBDEN BRIDGE, YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND – 1st August 2011

They say you never forget your first love – Shedfire and Brant Richards rejoin On-One and head up Titus.

When Brant Richards the self styled eccentric mountain bike designer and Planet-X entrepreneur Dave Loughran joined forces in 1999 to start and create the worlds first direct selling original upstart mountain bike brand On-One, little did they know of the journey they would undertake. Fun, direct selling, tongue in cheek, irrelevant, yet brutally aggressive in its cost to retail – cut out the middlemen business model – On-One was quickly adopted by a multitude of mountain bikers as the enfant terrible of the bicycle industry and the two were set to become great friends as well as business partners.

Fast forward to 2008 and 10 years of a tumultuous journey, the pair were struggling to cope with the demands and growing pains of a rapidly expanding business with inadequate systems and processes. The relationship fractured and both men set off on their own separate paths with Richards setting up his Shedfire consultancy with designer Matt Booth, that in the next two years was to create and develop brands Ragley, Nukeproof and Vitus for the worlds biggest online retailer Chain Reaction Cycles and distributor Hotlines.

Meanwhile in the background Loughran was investing in and installing a cutting edge detailed operating system, new website, and a state of the art warehouse and showroom facility. Once implemented the new look Planet X/On-One saw its turnover triple within a 12 month period.

Fast forward again to November 2010 when Loughran and Planet X took control of cult US brand Titus bikes in their first ever acquisition – the search was on for a lead designer to head up Titus and no matter which way he turned, he knew there was only one person he wanted for the task.

A chance meeting at the Taipei Bicycle tradeshow in April followed shortly after by meeting again at the funeral of their hugely popular former co-worker and Planet X stalwart Ray Eden set the wheels of reconciliation in motion. Finally in a full circle unexpected announcement Richards and his company Shedfire are today pleased to announce they have joined forces with Planet X again in what they see as a chance to finish what they started 10 years ago.

“We have learned a lot about ourselves personally as well as the bicycle business as a whole. Despite the fact that the company Brant left two years ago bears no resemblance to the professional outfit that we are today its very fair to say that I missed his energy and enthusiasm. We have unfinished business with On-One and have a great new challenge in rebuilding Titus – I’m supercharged TNT guns of the Navarone excited”, said Loughran.

Richards said “I’ve always kept an eye on what On-One were doing and to a certain extent it was, and always would be, my first love. I’ve had an absolute blast with CRC and whilst I’m especially sorry to move away from Ragley, the challenge presented to me at On-One and Titus is a career defining opportunity.
The potential for Titus as a worldwide player is massive, and its history and pedigree carry a lot of kudos with me personally. I am extremely nervous and respectful of this, and my task is to keep Titus true to its roots, retaining USA production will be a big priority and thats going to be an exciting journey There’s so much still to do at On-One in crazy niches that aren’t being served properly.
When I left on-one in 2009, Dave said it was “like Robbie leaving Take That”… Well, Robbie’s back. For Good.”
